After reading some 200 books on the subject of WWII, Joanna Bourke's milestone volume is of decisive significance in illuminating and clarifying the love-hate nature of killing in warfare. Spanning WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam, often in the words of the individual British and American soldiers, it is bothcompelling and terrifying. It opens up a window to the dark side of human nature that all need identify and understand.I would have liked to have heard from the other side...from the German,Japanese, Italian combatants, etc. In any case, a highly recommended book for the scholar, researcher or individual seeking to fathom a subject intrinsic to human history.
