Payment methods policy

Only payment methods offered at eBay checkout are allowed.

This policy was updated on 18 August 2024 to reflect that American Express is no longer accepted as a form of payment for checkout or selling fees on eBay, and is effective as of that date.

To help provide a safe experience, we only allow payment methods that offer strong protection for buyers and sellers.

What is the policy?

The following payment methods are not allowed, including:

  • Sending cash through the post
  • Point-to-point cash transfer services such as Western Union or MoneyGram

Direct contact information can only be exchanged after eBay checkout is complete. This includes asking buyers to get in touch with details of alternative payment methods.

The following payment methods are offered at eBay checkout:

  • Credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard)
  • Afterpay
  • Zip
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay
  • PayPal
  • eBay gift card or eBay voucher

Available payment options may vary depending on the item price, listing category and the buyer's device.

Sellers must offer Pay on pickup for the following categories:

  • Cars
  • Motorcycles

  • Boats
  • Caravans

Activity on eBay is required to follow this policy, the eBay User Agreement and all applicable laws, as well as respect the rights of third parties. If it doesn't, eBay may take action consistent with applicable laws and the eBay User Agreement, and may even be legally required to do so. Such actions may include, as an example only: Removing the listing or other content, issuing a warning, restricting activity or account suspension.
