Discounts Manager

Discounts Manager – formerly Promotions Manager – provides eBay Store subscribers with an easy way to set up special offers on eBay. Discounts can help you attract more buyers, clear old stock, increase average order size, and even lower postage costs by bundling more items per order.

You can set up four different types of special offers using Discounts Manager:

  • Order discounts – Offer discounts based on order size, or the amount spent by a buyer. You can also create discounts such as a percentage off an additional item, or buy one get one free
  • Coupons – Offer exclusive discounts to buyers by using a coded coupon
  • Sales events – Reduce prices for selected items or categories
  • Volume price discounts – Offer tiered discounts to buyers who purchase multiple quantities of a single item

Discover more about Discounts Manager in our Seller Centre - opens in new window or tab.

Using Discounts Manager

To get started, go to the Marketing tab - opens in new window or tab in Seller Hub and select Discounts. We'll guide you through the steps to set up your chosen campaign.

For items to be eligible for Discounts Manager, the listing must be in fixed price format with Buy It Now pricing.

Items will appear at the advertised price, and the discount will be applied in your buyer's shopping cart and at checkout.

How different offers work together

If several discounts are running at the same time on one of your items, we'll automatically apply the best discount for your buyer at checkout.

If you've set up a coupon, buyers can apply it on items that have a sale event, but not on top of an order discount or volume pricing discount. If an item has a Best Offer or Offer to buyers, the offer takes priority, and the buyer won't be able to redeem the coupon.

Tip
You can see sales figures and a tracking graph for your discounts in the Marketing tab - opens in new window or tab in Seller Hub.

How to create an order discount

Here's how to set up order discount offers:

  1. Go to the Marketing tab - opens in new window or tab in Seller Hub and select Discounts.
  2. Select Create a discount and then Order discount.
  3. Select your category and objective (e.g. introduce new items, attract buyers at peak shopping times, move older items) and we'll recommend some discounts for you.
  4. Select your offer type, and how you want to apply the offer to your items (e.g. "Save $10 when you spend $100 or more", or "Save 20% when you buy 3 items or more").
  5. Choose Select items to manually add items to your discount, or Create rules to automatically select items based on category and price, with filters based on product identifiers.
  6. Give your offer a name, duration, description and an offer image.
  7. Select Launch.

How to create coupons

When you create a coupon, buyers can enter the code at checkout for a discount on your items. Creating coupons allows you to:

  • Send a printed coupon code in your order to encourage repeat purchases
  • Offer a discount to customers instead of adjusting the item price
  • Control your spend on discounts and protect your margins with options like minimum spend, expiry date, budget, etc.
  • Target coupons to different groups of buyers (for example, as part of your Store newsletter)

You can choose two types of coupon:

  • A public coupon means that the code will be shown to all buyers when your listing appears in eBay search results and on the listing page
  • A private coupon means that anyone who has the code can use it, but it won't be posted on eBay. You can choose how you'd like to share the code.

Here's how to create a coupon for your buyers:

From the Marketing tab in Seller Hub
  1. Select Discounts.
  2. Select Create a discount, then Coupons.
  3. Set the discounts and conditions of your offer and choose eligible items. You can also choose to set a budget and other usage limits for your offer.
  4. Add an image and a short description for the coupon.
  5. Schedule your offer or select Start Immediately.
  6. Review and select Launch coupon.

From your Active listings page:
  1. In Active listings, select one or more fixed price, multi-quantity listings.
  2. Select Add or review discounts.
  3. From the pop-up, select Coupon.

On the eBay app:
  1. Select the menu icon on the home screen.
  2. Tap Selling, then tap Orders.
  3. Tap Send coupon or Boost buyer engagement.
  4. On the Send coupon screen, tap Create coupon.
  5. Enter the details of your offer, including a description, duration, and image.
  6. Tap Launch coupon.

When you create coupons on the eBay app, the coupon code needs to be unique across eBay, and your campaign will begin immediately after you launch the coupon.

Sharing coded coupons on social media platforms

When you create a new coded coupon, you will have the option to share the coupon through the following social media platforms:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Pinterest
  • Whatsapp
  • Email

When sharing a coupon, you can edit the caption with up to 280 characters. By default, a link to the coded coupon terms and conditions will always be included.

If you choose to share a coded coupon at a later point in time, as long as the coupon is "Active", you can select the Share option from the action list next to each active coupon in Discounts Manager.

Creating buyer groups

Buyer groups let you send coded coupons and/or Store newsletters to specific groups of buyers, for example:

  • Buyers who have been following your Store but haven't bought yet
  • Previous customers who bought from you in the past month or the past year
  • Customers who bought in a specific category

Here's how to create a buyer group:

  1. Go to the Marketing tab - opens in new window or tab in Seller Hub and select Buyer groups - opens in new window or tab.
  2. Select Create buyer group and choose which type of buyers you want to send coupons to:
    • Select Previous customers to increase your base of repeat customers with targeted coupons
    • Select Followers to encourage followers to shop for the first time and get previous customers to come back
  3. For previous customers, select these parameters to define your buyer group:
    • Time frame: Buyers who have bought from you during a specific period, e.g. over the last year
    • Category: Buyers who have bought items from one of your categories, e.g. if they only shop for homewares from your Store
  4. For followers, select these parameters to define your buyer group:
    • Time following: New followers (within the last 15 days), or followers who have been following your Store for any duration
    • Buying status: Filter followers based on whether they have purchased in the past year
  5. Name your group and review the estimated buyer count at the point of creation.
  6. Select Save buyer group.

Tip
Buyers can only receive one coupon from you every 14 days, so not all buyers in your group may be eligible to receive the coupon.

How to create a Sale Event discount

It's easy to put some or all of your items on sale. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Marketing tab - opens in new window or tab in Seller Hub and select Discounts.
  2. Select Create discount and then Sale event.
  3. Choose your discount, e.g "Take 20% off each item" or "Take $10 off each item".
  4. Choose Select items to manually add items to your discount, or Create rules to automatically select items based on category and price, with filters based on product identifiers.
  5. Give your offer a name, duration, description and an offer image.
  6. Select Launch.

When creating these discounts, bear in mind that listings must be listed at the 'old' price for a minimum of 10 days before being included in a sale event.

Items can be included in a sale for a maximum of 14 days, after which they need to be excluded again for at least 10 days before being re-added.

How to set up volume pricing

Volume pricing discounts encourage buyers to purchase multiple quantities of a single item.

Here's how to create a volume pricing offer:

  1. Go to the Marketing tab - opens in new window or tab in Seller Hub and select Discounts.
  2. Select Create discount and then Volume pricing.
  3. Give your offer a name. (Your buyers won't see this name.)
  4. Decide on the level of discount you want to offer based on the quantity of items the buyer selects. (For example: Buy one t-shirt at full price, buy 2 t-shirts and save 5%, buy 3 t-shirts and save 10%, buy 4 or more t-shirts and save 15%.)
  5. Select Add inventory, then choose Select items to add up to 500 items using filters, or Create rules to apply volume pricing to a selection of your inventory automatically.
  6. Enter the duration for your offer.
  7. Select Launch.

Tip
You can also set up volume pricing when listing an item, or from the Listings tab - opens in new window or tab in Seller Hub.

Using Discounts Manager, you can encourage buyers to make a purchase, build buyer loyalty, test offers and manage your own campaigns and budget.
