  • An excellent recording of a neglected masterpiece

Auber's most popular opera, a grand opera with an attractive and lively score, greatly admired by Wagner, receives excellent treatment here. It reguires two tenors with high Rossinian extensions to their voices, and John Aler fits the bill admirably as the erring prince Alphonse, and Alfredo Krauss has as well a bite to his sound, and is excellent in the more dramatically demanding role of Masaniello the brother of La Muette. the role of La Muette (the Mute) is taken by a dancer, and the recording moves on without marking her danced responses. June Anderson's lovely and flexible voice makes an attractive Princess Elvire. The recording made in 1996 is in excellent sound and with a good supporting French cast.
