Additional Information
Director Robert Benton brings Philip Roth's 2000 novel THE HUMAN STAIN to the screen in this lavish production, with expert cinematography from Jean-Yves Escoffier. Coleman Silk (Anthony Hopkins) is a light-skinned African-American college professor who has kept his true racial identity secret for the majority of his life. His career comes to a sudden halt when he makes a comment that is misinterpreted as a racial slur. Soon after he is fired, Silk hooks up with young Faunia Farely (Nicole Kidman). The affair with Farely, who is almost half Silk's age, becomes small-town gossip, and attracts the attention of Farely's psychotic ex-husband, Lester (Ed Harris). As Lester seeks vengeance, still angry at his ex-wife, Silk must make some tough decisions about his affair with Farely, leading to the film's nail-biting conclusion.<BR>Benton draws incredibly convincing performances from his two lead actors. Hopkins ably transcends his Caucasian ethnicity to play an African American. And Kidman fully embraces her character as a downtrodden janitor who is determined to rise beyond her humble beginnings. The two actors conquer the difficult subject matter, offering fascinating commentary on racial mores and relationship issues.

  • THE HUMAN STAIN ANTHONY HOPKINS NICOLE KIDMAN

I WATCHED THIS FILM TWICE AND IT WAS EXCELLENT. Hopkins is Coleman Silk, an aging and respected professor of literature at an idyllic New England liberal arts college, who, in the "now" of 1998, runs afoul of extremist political correctness. He's accused of racism after referring to two students, who've been absent from his class for the first 5 weeks of the term, as "spooks", i.e. ghosts. Silk has never met them under any circumstances, but, as bad luck would have it, they're both Black. Called onto the carpet by the Board, and receiving no support from those who should know better, Coleman angrily resigns. When Silk breaks the news to his wife, she suffers a fatal heart attack. As Coleman puts it, his persecutors killed the wrong person. On the rebound, Silk meets Faunia Farely ...

  • great book mediocre movie

do yourself a favour and read the book. the dvd is passable but nothing like the novel. the casting is particularly bizarre - Gary Sinise is meant to be around 65 and a similar age to Hopkins' character - who simply doesnt fit the role either. Kidman put on an interesting performance but just looks like an aussie who hasnt discovered the shampoo. only ed harris is believable there a 2 good things about the film. firstly look out for the old photo when silk first meets zuckerman - a nice touch as its a young roth himself i believe. And of course the script come from a fantastic book that - written at the end of the clinton era when one could only dream of an Obama ages - takes on a whole new (sic) skin when watched today
