It has a vent at the back so I think you should be able to operate it even when it's closed but I viewed some posts which stated it's not recommended to operate these vents when it's closed :(

- r***r (681)- Feedback left by buyer.More than a year agoVerified purchaseAdd said this UNIT CAN OPERATE WITH THE LID CLOSED AND CAN STILL BE USED WHILE RAINING But instructions said for safety reasons,the fan was designed to not run unless the lid is up, which would mean lid would be in the open position , talk about the two different meanings on the use for operating the fan . This seller needs to open a box and read what is written on the instructions have not test fan yet myself but it all was well package for shipment ,looks all ok.
