The Louisiana singer Phil Phillips's only major hit came in 1959 with the evocative "Sea of Love," which has subsequently been covered by a wide variety of artists including Robert Plant and Cat Power. (Typically, Phillips has never received royalties for the song.) This timely Bear Family best-of gathers the balladeer's complete 1950s and early-`60s Khoury/Mercury recording catalog, including his versions of "Stormy Weather" and "Unchained Melody."
