Before I have bought this lens I was using much cheaper wide angle zoom lens. It was Tokina 20-35. To be honest, it was pretty good one, and only problem it was not good enough in extreme light condition. Pictures against the light from about 45 degrees were foggy. Upgrade to Canon 17-40 I have gained some focal length both ways, constant f 1:4 and much better results against the light. All the tests I have made confirmed my decision of paying more to get much better results. Perfect lens for travel paired with 70-300 Canon DO gives you everything you need anywhere. Jack
