I first read this book about 10-15 years ago and it lesd me to purchase every book by this author. It established it's author as one of the greatest writer's in the English language in my mind and I don't think my being Irish had anything to do with it. Nothing has happened to change that opinion. I made the mistake of loaning to a friend and never got it back which lead to my search for it on eBay. It is very hard to describe exactly what this man's books are about except to say that they say what we all think to ourselves when we are alone. Thjey are full of great humor and profound truth at the same time. His characters never tell lies about themselves to themselves and never seek pity despite some very difficult times Please read this book and you will be hooked for life. Although Donleavey is best known for The Ginger Man, this is the one that hit my soul the hardest. I must warn you that his books are hard to find in stores and eBay may well be your best source. -CheersRead full review
