I've not long taken up learning to paint with watercolours. It's a surprisingly costly hobby, but there's really only so long you can continue using cheap pigments once you've decided to keep going and feel the upgrade is justified. This set is by a reputable manufacturer and is a nice middle-ground in terms of expense and quality. I'm still very much an utter beginner but these paints are a great stepping stone and well worth the outlay.

Winsor and Newton have a great history in manufacturing art supplies and their reputation is well deserved. I marked this set of paints with 5 stars because they are marketed as Student grade watercolours and they are excellent student grade watercolours. They will not perform as well as professional watercolours but that is not what they are and Winsor and Newton are quite clear on that point. I have used the pocket travel set of Cotmans and they are great for cutting your teeth in watercolouring. This large set is perfect for the watercolourist who wants to sit down and enjoy the pleasure of this art without having to spend a lot of time mixing colours as this set comes with a generous range of convenience colours. If you are experienced with proffessional watercolours then you will be dismayed that some of the colours will not perform in the way you expect them to. For instance, Ultramarine, normally a granulating colour, does not granulate very much at all in the Cotmans set. I found that prussian blue and some of the common earth tones a little weak and hard to re-wet. On the other hand i love their indigo, diaxazine purple and gamboge hue fantastic and well pigmented. There are a lot of cadmium hues in the warm red and yellows and that may or may not put people off. i have no problem with them for the level of art I use them for. On average these half pans take a little bit longer to re-wet than professional paints but i find dropping a little water from a syringe onto the ones you intend to use as you are setting up solves that problem. Overall I am happy i purchased these paints. they are great for exploring the media with and having fun playing with ideas. I recommend them as a convenience set for the beginner and intermediate and a fun cheaper alternative for the professional who wants to preserve their more expensive paints for important work.Read full review

I was very reluctant to buy this set, I've heard mixed reviews on winsor and Newton products. I was worried I wouldn't get value for my money with the half pans however I was very pleased with how unbelievably pigmented each of the colours are! They work great with a variety of papers and the pigment is very consistent. The only downsides are each individual pan needs to be unwrapped and the colour chart isn't accurate so paint swatches are recommended. Over all a beautiful set and definitely worth the money!

I’ve had this for about 5 months now, and it’s served me so amazing, giving me vibrant and bright colours, the pallete was easy to move around to make it my own. It’s portable and can be used for outside painting. End of the day was a awesome purchase and I’m definitely getting another one later on
