'Romulus, My Father' is an adaptation of Raimond Gaita?s award-winning memoir. It tells the story of Romulus, his wife Christina and their struggle in the face of great adversity to bring up their son, Raimond. The story moves between comedy and tragedy and is rich with the details of the migrant experience of life in Australia in the early 1960s. At the heart of the film is the relationship between Raimond and his father, set against the profound tragedy of his mother, Christina?s descent into depression and ultimate death.

No easy life
ROMULUS, MY FATHER is the biography of Raimond Gaita directed by Richard Roxburgh. Perfectly cast and filmed on location in a suitably bleak and stark countryside. Tells the story of Yugoslav migrant families who attempt to settle in isolated areas without very much support structure to fall back on. So we see through the 9 year olds eyes his dysfunctional parents, and friends who come and go. Depression, and the effect that suicide has on everyone. It is incredibly generous at allowing us to gain insight into the lives of those who battled during the 1950s to settle back into some sort of ordinary life after WWII - even when the cards are stacked against success. A brilliant movie - heart rending, powerful, intriguing - and the behind the scenes program tells us that Raimond went on to become a philosopher and lecturer in real life. Amazing.Read full review

Stunning, Brilliant, REAL.
This film is based on a true story of a post war Migrant family, coming to central Victoria, Australia. It is passionate, beautiful, heart breaking and real. The film is beautifully made, and an honest adaptation from the original book "Romulus my Father", written by Raimond Gaita. I can't recommend this film highly enough! Brilliant!
