The bipolar electrolytic capacitors of the ECap AC Audio Coupling & Signal Cap RAW series have foils whose surface has been roughened and thus enlarged by a special etching process. Since the capacitance of a capacitor is proportional to its surface area, this results in the smallest and cheapest Mundorf audio capacitors. Aluminium electrolytic capacitors are used wherever film capacitors are not an option due to space and/or cost reasons. Polarized electrolytic capacitors, which have the most compact design and are therefore used for very large capacitances (e.g. in the power supply of amplifiers), cannot transmit audio signals because these are alternating current signals. Bipolar electrolytic capacitors, such as the ECap AC series, have a second aluminum foil, which makes them resistant.
