We used ours for keeping in contact between cars when traveling in convoy, when split up on long beach walks and calling the kids back for lunch etc at the campsites/caravan parks. They are also invaluable when staying in places that have no mobile/cell coverage. The kids loved them because they are so simple to use and it allowed them the freedom to go exploring on their own without us loosing contact with them. As for range, we tested and achieved loud and clear comms over a distance of 2.5 Km between two headlands on the coast without the use of repeaters. Battery life was as expected, we got about 5 days of light use out of them, the kids did go a little crazy singing songs over the radio to each other but mostly it was just basic comms. Whilst not water resistant, they stood up to constant beach use and the associated sand/dirt that goes with that. Certainly not a must-have item but they are amazingly convenient once you have them.Read full review

These are not a bad unit but what makes them virtually useless is their insatiable desire for batteries. They take 3 AAA s which last about an hour. Their hunger for fresh batteries meant I had to remortgage the house to get through January and by February i expect to be living in a cardboard box. Can't wait till they get put up the back of the cupboard to be thrown out in 3 years time.
