A small, inexpensive prime which works well
The Canon 'Nifty Fifty" has been around for a while. You can't beat prime lenses as value for money and this one is no exception. At f/1.8 it is significantly brighter than Canon's kit zooms. It is compact and lightweight with good sharpness. 50mm focal length lends itself to many uses, from landscapes (provided you don't want to go very wide) to group shots and portraits. Closest focus distance is about 1 foot. There is no image stabilisation but I haven't missed it. Another nice thing is that it has been around for a long time, so even going back to Photoshop CC2014, correction data is included. This lense is a good match to any Canon DSLR, full frame or APS-C

THE WORLDS HIGHEST SELLING LENS FOR A REASON
A must-have lens for beginners and intermediate alike. You won't find a more usable and practical lens for the money. A great focal length for portraits on Crop-Sensor cameras, and a handy general purpose lens for *all* cameras. The f/1.8 aperture gives you good bokeh and the fixed (non zoom) focal lengths forces beginners to move their feet to compose a shot. Perfect!

Hard to beat with sharp pictures and super quiet focus 50mm f1.8 lens.
For the price, this 50mm f1.8 lens is hard to beat. It can give really sharp images and provides nice bokeh when the aperture is kept low. It has STM focusing and is very quiet, so perfect for video. It's just a great lens, and truly earns it's still kept nickname, the 'Nifty-fifty!'.
