A lot of reviews around the web would have you believe that the size, weight and price tag of this lens are major issues not to be overlooked. I’m here to tell you that of the three, only one holds any weight. Prior to receiving this lens, I was worried that it would be too cumbersome to lug around any where, let alone use for any significant amount of time. My worries simply dissipated once I held this marvel in my hands, attached to the a7r3. With both hands on the body of the camera, it is significantly imbalanced, but who doesn’t support a zoom lens with their left hand automatically, whether it be to zoom in or adjust focus manually. I’ve found that in most circumstances, I don’t find it to feel terribly balanced. The weight actually has a benefit in that it allows you to better reduce micro jitters when filming. Adding a bit of heft is always beneficial. That benefit, coupled with OSS and the a7r iii’s ibis, and you can have remarkably stable footage for such a long zoom, hand held. The images taken with this lens are simply phenomenal, especially at full zoom, wide open. It’s sharp, with superb separation of subject and background. The out of focus elements are totally smooth, bokeh is absolutely perfect (subjective). The worst thing about this lens is it’s price tag. It’s significantly more expensive than equivalent lenses from other brands, and it could be argued that you’d be better served going for the 70-200 f4, and pocketing the hefty amount of cash left over. For many, this would be the way to go. However if you are obsessed with having the best lens and image quality, with price being an afterthought, then you will be most happy with this purchase. Definitely consider this lens if you have enough disposable income to afford it. You will be impressed by the performance and results. PS. Autofocus is fast AF for both photo and video.Read full review
