Michael Haneke’s work as a film director is exceptional in the way it allows characters is be, and show their inner lives. His narraritives give us all we need to know, but we are made to observe the details and discover final truths. White Ribbon is an extraordinary example of this. Strange accidents happen is a German Village, just war is about to break out. To understand who is responsible we watch and listen as the villagers lives unfold. The revelations are shocking. Shot in black and white, the film has a bleak ambience which dynamically reinforces the lives of the villagers, the geography and the awful conclusion we finally come to. Performances are superb.
