I have found that some old style life jackets, even when in good condition, will not adequately support an adult male of average or slightly above average build. The new jacket [ BURKE MANUAL INFLATABLE RED 150N LIFEJACKET (PFD1) AUST STANDARD AS4758.1 ], uses a canister of pressurized CO2 for buoyancy witch is manually deployed via a rip cord, and is rated for open water use. A common sense note of caution: familiarize yourself with the method of fitting and strap adjustment well before taking it on the boat. Once adjusted, stow it, but wear it onboard. The instructions do not allow the use of a lanyard with this type of PFD. I might set up a light weight cord to use as an engine kill switch, and attach it by a Velcro band to my lower leg or angle ... but am still thinking about that. A sudden departure from the boat, with engines operating, would not only leave a sole operator stranded in the water, but would also prevent deploying the epirb, which would normally be mounted in the vicinity of the cockpit bulkhead or dash panel, and so a light weight kill switch line might be a reasonable accessory to have.Read full review
