Muriel just wants to get married. She loves ABBA but hates living in Porpoise Spit. With some deception, she ends up holidaying on an island resort & teaming up with old schoolfriend, Rhonda. They move to Sydney together. Muriel still longs to marry and, at every opportunity, she visits bridal shops to try on wedding gowns. She gets her wedding day but all for financial gain. After a family tragedy, she returns to Porpoise Spit. There, she makes amends with her father & takes best friend Rhonda back to Sydney.

Muriels Wedding
It was hard to score this film. I tried explaining the concept of to a younger person who had no knowledge. But when you break down some of the characters - the abusive father, the day dreaming Muriel, the friend who contracts cancer and ends up in a wheel chair, the cuckolding fickle friends, the mother who suicides all set to an ABBA sound track - it left them looking at me saying "and this is one of the all time favorite movies?". I must admit on watching it again years later they were right. Australia has become a different place. I know many people hold this movie close, but I'm not so sure how well it will age going into the future.
