The real cover is great if you have more than 1 cat, it stops other cats coming from behind the feeder and stealing food. 1 cat I don’t think you would need one. But the rear cover does enclose the feeder better so the cat knows where to go in to eat. It’s a great buy, solid and sturdy and easy to put on
