Though not a full blown "Floyd"show, David Gilmour gives one of his most complex performances(even playing saxophone),for an outstandingly receptive crowd, who stood for the whole show, (I didn't see any seats), in the shipyards of Gdansk, where the Solidarity Movement began. As one would well know by now, when one attends a show like this you get musicianship that is non-pareil. This reviewer is very glad to see Phil Manzanera once again taking the stage. A wise decision by Mr. Gilmour adding him to the roster! Albeit, a solid undertaking. However, the sad note in this is Richard Wright's final appearance on stage, I believe, before succumbing to cancer. His tenderness on the keyboards have been a mainstay for many years. He will be missed. RIP Mr. Wright.
But he is Floyd. Conjuring the ghost of Syd and with Rick Wright in his last appearance, the enormity of where David has been and how far along in that journey is evident in every moment of this beautifully crafted set. I saw Roger in Pittsburgh this year. The Wall was phenomenal, but there is a reason that David is permitted to call himself the VOICE and the guitar of Pink Floyd. I thought the ending of 'take a breath' was transcendent, with Gilmours' and his friends' playing with the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orch. was literally stunning. Gilmour's voice is gorgeous as always. Richard Wright, his last appearance unfortunately, received a roar from the crowd who then broke into a chant of 'richard..richard..' . If you can stay dry eyed after that you are a stronger person then I am. 'Astronomie Dominé' and 'Echoes' are simply astounding, aurally perfect. The first CD begins with three from Dark Side of the Moon which are "Speak to Me", "Breathe", "Time" and "Breathe (Reprise)" (all are excellent versions). Next is the On an Island portion . "Castellorizon" is amazing live (especially with the orchestra) followed by a spirited "On An Island" which is superior to the studio version. "The Blue" is followed and betters the version on the Remember That Night DVD. Next is "Red Sky at Night" which is more haunting here with the orchestra and the addition of Carin's lap steel guitar to offset Gilmour's passionate sax playing. Next is a jazzy "This Heaven". We follow with "Then I Close My Eyes" is an excellent version. "Smile" is a great version. "Take A Breath" is awesome here, especially with the orchestra. "A Pocketful of Stones" follows and is passionate. The excellent "Where We Start" finishes the first CD . The second disc starts with a haunting "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (with a superb glass harmonica intro) then followed by spirited versions of "Astronomy Domine" and "Fat Old Sun". "High Hopes" is next and works great with orchestra ) then a spellbinding version of "Echoes" . "Wish You Were Here" follows and is a great version. Next is the song "A Great Day for Freedom" ). CD 2 ends with a jawdropping version of "Comfortably Numb" (which sadly has the last vocal performance of Rick Wright). Gilmour soars into comfortably numb, which has been voted the best guitar solo ever performed. If you are reading this you should buy this.Read full review
