I could feel the difference when I first lifted it up from the box. Very decent build quality. fast focus, ultra silent focusing motor. It's the lens I take out with me most of the time, which implies it being a decent general purpose lens. On my 5D mrk II, it works perfectly. I do a bit portrait with this lens on my canon 40D, which is convenient. However, it does have front-back focus problem with my 40D. Mind you though that it is not a good macro lens. It's very soft with a dreamy effect from f-stop 1.4 to 1.8. The sharpness is greatly improved from f-stop 2.0 I figured that if you shoot in a restaurant with soft ambient light from the artificial light source, the lens actually generates very sharp images at f-stop 1.4 Overall, it's a very good decent lens.
Superb lens for the money. Incredibly sharp with great colour tone. Auto focus is pretty good as for build quality. I’ve had the 50mm f/1.8 and I found the f/1.4 lens to be much better in all aspects. Well worth the extra money. Great portrait lens.

The Canon ef 50mm f1.4 usm lens offers excellent image quality under a number of lighting conditions, it works very well under low light conditions. This lens ergonomically great with a good wide central focusing ring, it has AF but allows manual control. Images are sharp and focused and offers a good depth of field. Great prime lens to own.
