I absolutely loved True Detective season 1 and thought it would be very hard to follow up, especially with Harrelson & McConaughey as the lead actors. Now, after owning my own copy of season 2, I find it hard to fathom all the criticism this season has attracted. It's different enough to stand out in its own right but has enough of the mood and aura of the first season to deserve the True Detective brand. I think the casting is spot on and even though I'm not a huge fan of Vince Vaughn I think he pulls off his character convincingly as do McAdams and Farrell. It certainly paid to ignore the critics on this one.

Warning: Spoiler alerts. Season 2 was widely disliked upon its initial release. The combination of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaghey in the first season was powerful, and was always going to be a hard act to follow. Plus, S01 ended on an ambiguously postive note. S02 was tragedy all the way. And at the end, there was no getting around it. The bad guys came out on top. There were a few less of them than at the start, but those who survived were winners. The remnants of the good guys - mostly the good women - were the ones who fled. Knowing that in advance made rewatching S02 easier. I was able to get past the inherent injustice of the situation and look at the characters. And dark as S02 is, I enjoyed my second look at it. I have to watch the first season again now, just to decide which I like best.Read full review
