Yes it was "soft" rubber and labelled as 40mm but not suitable for our 40mm basins. Base of plug is a loose fit in the hole and top flange is small and easily disturbed. So water leaks past quickly. We needed plugs which are a neat, firm fit in the hole and act more like a cork than a loose lid. There are so many variations on plugs which are all labelled 40mm but they can be quite different. I think it is really necessary to see, feel and measure plugs before purchase.
