The “Okoberrevolution” locomotive factory in Lugansk, Ukraine, delivered “Taiga drums” to the allied COMECON countries as early as 1965. The first M62 series locomotives for the Soviet Union's railways were not delivered until 1970. The double locomotives known as 2M62 were much more in demand. They are firmly coupled to each other during operation; the individual units only have a complete driver's cab on one front side. Between 1976 and 1988, 2,550 individual units were delivered. The first delivery series up to 2M62-0069 Noch had side entry doors in the rear driver's cab.
