Well, it has a red ring. It's an L-series and the heft, construction and smoothness of the focus and zoom rings is exceptional. It is also the cheapest of the L-series. A remarkable lens, considering the price. The difference between it's newer, superior siblings is perhaps not worth the enormous price gap.

The Cannon 17-40 f4 L is admittedly a older lens however it definitely stands the test of time, shooting with a super wide(on full frame) is incredibly fun of course a zoom of this type has its floors such as barrel distortion at the widest end that said it is sharp and very useful for a walking around lens and since it is a well priced pro level lens it is worth getting ...Highly recommended.

I have taken many great landscapes with one of these. If you aren’t looking for real low light ability you wouldn’t bother to fork out for the 16-35mm f2.8. These are a GREAT lens. Easy to use. Great focus and superb sharpness. I learnt so much from this lens. Wish I could post some images to back up this review. A great intro lens to see the difference between L series lenses and all the others.
