This is the collection of three Ultramarines books about the Adventures of Uriel Ventris. As I have already reviewed all three of the books within, I will include those reviews. The only thing better that these three books, is all three in one cover, with an all new prologue to REALLY set it off! Excellent! Book 1: Nightbringer Follow through the eyes of an invisible observer as the Ultramarines Chapter of the Space Marines uncover dissident plots on a backwater imperial planet and bring the planetary government back into imperial laws, and feel the fury as they discover the real plot behind the planetary unrest as an ancient evil is uncovered and plans are irreversibly set in motion ot awaken an evil that has been in slumber since eons before humanity climbed from the primordial soup. Any fan of the Adeptus Astartes will love this adventure with the Chapter that holds the Codex Astartes as the Bible of Battle! Another piece of Candy for all 40k fans! Book 2: Warriors of Ultramar The best part of this book is spread out throughout the entirety of the book. From the initial attacks of the tyranid fleet, the detailed description of the preliminary incursions of a tyranids planetary invasion, to the absolute inhumanity of the hive mind and its creations. This book is great for tyranids players and any other fans within the 40k universe. As usual the writing style of Graham McNeill stops being words on the page and becomes a movie in your mind's eye. Excellent! 5 Stars, 2 thumbs way up, A+, outstanding. And I didn't even mention the Ultramarines... Book 3: Dead Sky, Black Sun Being the third in the series this book really rallies your senses! Imagine being thrust into a damnable situation for doing what you thought was right and just. Finding themselves in hell (Or at least a close approximation) on an Iron Warriors ruled planet in the Eye of Terror, Captain Uriel Ventis and his ever faithful friend and Sergeant Pasanius traverse the depressing and immoralizing landscape in pursuit of the target of a Chapter "Death Oath". The allies and enemies found (and lost) along the way are fully realized and fleshed out, and really show how much Uriel's Soul Shines in the Emperor's Light! Though expelled from the Ultramarines Chapter, they never truly stop being Space Marines, and holding up all that it means to be one of the Emperor's Finest. A fitting end to an astounding adventure. Grade A reading. Final: Having them all in one spot couldn't be better. And the Cover Art is Spectacular! I can't wait for MORE!!Read full review
I have read dozens of Warhammer 40000 novels from the Black Library and this is easily rivals other top authors and series such as the Gaunt's Ghost novels. Unlike some Black Library authors, Graham Mcneill is a skilled writer and is knowledgable of the Ultramarines and the entire Warhammer 40000 universe. Some authors you can tell have never played the game, or are overall oblivious and ignorant to the bulk of the background for the races, armies, civilizations, and universe behind the game. All of that aside, this particular omnibus is well written and is among the best science fiction books I have had the pleasure of reading. The characters are fitting to their background and origins, while still being original and interesting, instead of copy and paste reused characters. Likewise the plot touches on known events in Warhammer 40k history while adding detail to them, but does not bind itself to only those events. The author keeps things moving at an enjoyable pace without leaving details and plot lines unanswered or concluded. Likewise the novels have been multifaceted and detailed enough to be interesting but not convoluted. All in all the novels have been well written, very entertaining, and I look forward to more from this author.Read full review
