A Macro Lense that give very sharp, close up photo's. Being a 100mm lense I am tending to leave it on the camera to take landscape photo's that I normally have used the 24-105mm Zoom to take. This means less changing of lenses than I thought. I now have some brilliant photo's of insects that happened to be on the flowers I used to test the new lens. Proves a great lens and camera combination can make anyone into a photographer, as I only need now to point and click.

Image quality is what you would expect from a macro lens, with f/2.8 range. The lens hood mounts on the front screw mounting, the same as the lens filter. For this model, later versions the lens hood is a slip on click version which is quicker and easier to use. Range adjustment is limited to one movement, on the earlier lens, later lens has adjustment and focus, two separate adjustments. Performance wise it does what it is designed to do. Allowing you to collect images at the finer end of the lens scale. As with all lens, price often reflects ability. This being an older lens, price, condition, is adjusted to effect sales.

This is a great lens, allows one to stand off from your subject is state-of-the-art in sharpness and can even be used for macro work hand-held because of the image stabilisation. Even used, this example is in immaculate condition in the glass, barrel, focussing and exposure.

This lens blows me away every time I use it. Very fast and quiet focusing which is perfect for insect photography. The image quality is amazing and I rarely have to edit my photos.

On more than one occasion, my wife and I have considered upgrading to Canon's L-series macro lens. However, every time we pull this out of the bag, we are blown away by the results. Would image stabilization be nice? Of course, it would be. Even still, this is a great lens. I would estimate that upwards of 95% of the images taken with this lens are taken with flash, making IS irrelevant. Another great aspect of this lens is its sharpness--L-series quality to be certain. Given it's lightweight and wonderful image quality, I would not hesitate to recommend this model to anyone. What's more, it has been very versatile as well. Although it is a specialty lens (for close up images) it has been wonderful for portraits as well. Anytime that I don't want to lug around my 70-200 2.8, this is the lens that gets thrown in the bag! Overall, an A quality piece of glass.Read full review
