I bought it secondhand to back up SB910 and the only difference I could find are "stand alone" "solid" colour filtets. They are handy but not worthy the $$$ difference. I hardly ever used them, and you can probably find them "generic"... People who complain about overheating probably have faulty units which should be serviced.

Well, I am still a beginner to photography, but I have to say that the Nikon SB-900 make a huge different in the shot,it's very powerful, fast recycling, I love the filter that's included in the package BUT it does overheat and stop working and you can lose a very good moment, I will consider buying the Nikon SB 910 unfortunately it was released only two weeks after I got the SB900
Simplicity at its best.. no brain user required

Excellent flash! At the beginning i was still hesitating which to buy between SB-700 and SB-900, in the end i made the decision to get the SB-900 instead; simply because it is the best and the flagship of Nikon's speedlight. I don't have to worry about upgrading in the future if the SB-700 doesnt provide enough power for me. It is definitely worth the extra bucks getting this flash. I upgraded to this flash from Nissin Di622 which i used for a year, it was a good flash but it no longer satisfies me. The SB-900 produces consistent and accurate i-TTL outputs where as the Nissin can be quite volatile sometimes. Another upside to the SB-900 is its accuracy when shooting into the sun too. The advantage of this flash over the SB-700 is the extra output, wider zoom range, PC sync pocket and multi flash mode. The downside of this flash is the giant size, if you need a flash to walk around whole day for a casual shooting, SB-700 will be the choice. Unless you have a D300 and above, the SB-900 will make your camera look small. The SB-900 also tends to make noises when you start it up and zooming, at first it can be annoying but if you're outdoor or you use it long enough, you will get used to it. IMO, nothing will go wrong if you buy this speedlight. SB-700 is better for casual uses but the SB-900 gives you the extras when you need it. Just in case one day you think of turning pro or start making money out of photography, you won't have to spend the extra bucks to upgrade again!Read full review
very easy to use, quite powerful, great all rounder. Had a SB-600 before this and find this has a fair bit more bang for your buck which is always good. Would recommend to anyone looking for more power in a small unit
Back to the old days, I used Metz Flash 45CL4, 60CT1 for my 35mm Film Cameras and Mamiya Medium format camera...When I switched to Digital Cameras, I was looking for a good flash to match my Nikon DSLR. and I found this flash. It makes me so happy, satisfies my needs. It's much better than what Ken Rockwell's comments . Costly, but you pay for the quality. I highly recommend this flash to anyone who is still looking for a good flash.
