A Testament to Organist/Composer, Jean Guillou
Recently retired, Guillou is extrememly highly regarded as an organist, famed for his idiosyncratic but interesting registrations, his fine sense of style and interpretation, and for his general flair. This 3 CD set comprises his more 'populist' performances, or so I thought. Included was a recording of a very rare Symphony (Joseph Jongen, Belgium)with Organ, recorded in Texas, and played by both orchestra and organist to a really high standard. An unexpected bonus! Disc 1 is recorded at St Eustace, Paris, played on really a famous modern organ that Guillou helped to design!, and where he was titular organist for many years. Although this disc contained much rather hackneyed stuff, it was played with real panache! Included was one of his own compositions, and it was really fine. Disc 2 was played on a smaller organ (designed by Guillou), and the works were generally less populist. Bach's 'Gigue' fugue was played superbly! The variety of style and character featured on this amazingly small organ was a credit to the performer/ designer. Disc 3 contained the superb Jongen Symphony. First class! The Saint-Saens 'Organ' Symphony, much over-played, was at least beautifully executed here. This, no doubt, will be one of my favourite recordings. Discs entitled 'Organ Spectacular' are usually filled with rather gimmicky transcriptions, corny 'novelties', etc. This charming set was a few notches above the rest, I feel.

Superb Music conducted by a Master Choral Conductor!
On discovering the nature of the baby she was to have, the 'virgin' Mary is supposed to have uttered this exquisite poetic prayer of thanks. "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my saviour...etc." (pretty good for a semi-educated girl of about 14?) J.S.Bach set these words in the form of an elaborate Cantata, and his work is very highly thought of! The setting is for choir, soloists and small orchestra. The version here is conducted by a leading conducter of Baroque music, and it promises to be really superb. Of particular interest is a short (very short!) aria by a soprano ("...for He hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden, and Holy is His name!") Of all the music I can remember hearing, this tiny aria is the ONLY one written strictly in the 'Harmonic' form of the Minor Scale. (It has a vaguely 'Egyptian' sound to my ears!) I await the arrival of this superb music with excitement, greatly valuing the work of John Elliot Gardiner, and adoring the music contained on the CD (there is another cantata on it.)

A really fine film
Very few Hollywood sourced films are of this quality. Excellent acting throughout, a compelling story, and a high standard of cinematography. A most memorable film.
